The process of understanding leadership is a lifelong undertaking. At Quest, we encourage students to examine their own leadership qualities and goals, and to begin to strengthen their skills. From required readings of works such as Steven Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People to providing time for personal reflection, Quest’s curriculum seeks to teach the notion that we are in control of our own lives, our internal states of mind, and of what we give to and get from the world.

A speaker series, comprised of some of the most inspiring and successful people in both business and civic ventures, seeks to enliven discussions of leadership and excellence. Individuals from varying professional backgrounds—representing the nonprofit, government, and commercial sectors—join us for an afternoon or evening to discuss their histories, leadership styles, and life philosophies. Speakers have included Justice Joyce Kennard, of the California Supreme Court; Scott Sassa, former executive of NBC; George Shultz, former US Secretary of State; and the late John Gardner, former Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, and acclaimed author of On Leadership.

At Quest, students have the opportunity to test out the ideas they are learning about leadership and themselves—both through projects and assignments, and in the residential environment of the summer program.

The outreach curriculum is an ideal arena in which students can explore their leadership styles—the next page details this aspect of Quest.
